Welcome to CM 1500, a monthly report that gives a snapshot of recent activity from the top 1,500 YouTube publishers, similar to how the Bloomberg Market Report summarizes the top publicly held companies. In this post, we will be looking at the movers and shakers in May 2012.
In May, YouTube finished its final corrections to Subscriber counts. Many channels took a big hit in Subscribers during this month, but there were still some YouTubers that managed to excel. ShutUpCartoons exploded and topped the charts in both Subscribers and Video Views. Their channel, which uses several hilarious weekly shows, gained close to 15 million Video Views and over 300,000 Subscribers last month.
The last big Subscriber scrub by YouTube cut channels of all categories, but YouTubers who release Entertainment videos bled the most with over a 500,000 Subscriber loss. Fortunately, since the last scrub, Subscriber gains have begun to grow again just in time for the heavy traffic of summer views.
